Is  your garage door OK for all garage doors openers?

Short, safe, answer is: One piece up-and-over, and sectional garage doors;

Fully retracting garage doors, one-piece, up-and-over garage doors, Sectional garage doors

Some sliding garage doors.

The truth is, there are only a few basic designs of garage doors. Here are the main ones.

One piece up-and-over retracting garage doors like this

Somfy Garage door openers will suit these garage doors. This model retracts fully into the garage - occasionally with a few inches only, no more than six or so - projecting past the opening in the open position.

The panel is held captive at each corner and connected to the door gear, and door frame, in one way or another. Springs are at each side of the door.

That's it. Simple isn't it?

Well ... some older types don't have springs, using instead, concrete weights - on cables - at each side. If all else is as described then they are in this category.

Sectional garage doors.

It's probably better to show two pictures of this type but one picture is worth a thousand words anyway.

You easily see where the name comes from. The door is made up of several panels or sections, hinged to change orientation from horizontal to vertical.

Canopy style garage doors.

Its name describes this door which, when in the open position, projects (canopy-like) about one third of its height onto the drive. They are also known as tilting doors and shin busters. And don't the ladies just love 'em ?

The counterbalance spring is usually fixed to the door frame along the top of the door inside the garage. There are a few varieties and some older canopy types operate on a cantilever system with springs at each side.

But if the garage door has rollers at each side (about one third of the door height from the floor), and if they run in channels fixed vertically on the inside face of the door frame .... then

these are canopy garage doors.

From here on it is a compromise. Whilst some will fit successfully with a suitable adaptor many are put off by the necessity for regular maintenance required to ensure efficiency.

Other alternatives include fitting a new retracting door, or converting it to a retracting model.

Expert advice to be taken on this one.

Some garage doors don't fit into these descriptions above but e-mail or a quick phone call, if you have to, will soon find an explanation and advice.
